‘nur das’ is an architectural intervention in front of the main entrance to Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. The original sentence from the 80s ‘Für unsere Studenten nur das Beste’ (Only the best for our students) is replaced by three own sentences that highlight other, critical perspectives.

The version ‚Für unsere Studierende nur das‘ (For our students only the best) is missing the ‚best‘ from the original sentence. Just as in reality the conditions for students could be improved:
Tutors do most of the classwork, but are paid low wages and cannot claim as many hours. Meanwhile, many professors do not have to document how few hours they spend on site. The cost of living is rising, so students without rich parents often need to work to pay for their studies.
Another fear is losing access to classes in this system. The risk of exclusion should be abolished.
With reference to John Cage’s ’10 Rules for Students and Teachers‘, students and professors are encouraged to be more committed. A call for professors to pull everything out of their students.

The phrase ‚Freiheit und Gleichgültigkeit‘ (Freedom and indifference) draws a parallel between the opportunities and risks of living together in an art academy.
Although there are people who fight passionately for better coexistence and do a lot of care work, they are a minority. In the artistic classes as well as in the workings of the committees, people like to take advantage of structures and benefits, but few people are giving something back to the community.
A call adressing students and professors to care better and pay more attention to each other.
